Are you still doing this? Will it harm your website if you still do this? Please advice as I am thinking of buying some for a new start up.. but I don't want to get harmed or penalized

I have the exact problem
What I beleive is diversity of links. If Google change algorithm and target payed links. then they are in hot water. you need to build links your self from free directory, articles, friends and any wherein the web.

Purchasing back links would do more harm than good for your website..

Google, if catches you, will penalize you (and can even ban you from Search Engine Results)..

Getting paid links will not always penalize your site. Purchasing links from sites which are irrelevant to your site's niche has a chance to penalize your site.

i dont think purchasing backlink would be good for website, as backlinks that really help are one which are long lasting, relevant to your website and those backlinks coming from good ranked site... so try going for generic ones instead of purchasing...

Yes, it is work until Google notice it, once your website is caught then it would heavily be penalized.
