I fully agree but it takes a lot of effort and you need to provide value... since it is other people receiving on the other end. I have received a lot of traffic from stubleupon but using it the way it is supposed to and building network there. Also having a facebook fan page and a twitter account is must have. Recently Google+ also have started paying a role and is worth picking up. We may even see Google+ having an important role in valuating content and this way having impact on SERP results.
