In-Image advertising provides some great additional revenue if you have photos on your site!

I have always earned my money through PPC, however I think that I might look into affiliate marketing as there is a lot more money to be made in that area.

Affiliate marketing is hard. I only made a couple of bucks selling subscriptions for dating sites, but not doing it anymore.

True it is hard but also worth the effort. 5-6 month ago I reached the tipping point and was able to switch to be a full time publisher (and a marketer behind the scene...doing value oriented affiliate marketing).
If I should give some advice it would be to
    1) focus on building an online magazine or blog where all content is carefully prepared and unique. You have to accept that it may take 6-18 month of work before you really break it but it is worth the effort.

    2) I have a rule that all of the content I produce (with a lot of help from outsourcing) is high quality value posts. This means I say no to guest posts that are obviously just spinned low quality replica articles sent to many many blogs (created by SEO companies building links for their customers).

    3) Another important rule is to publish on a regular schedule (daily, every second day, one particular day a week and so on.).

    4) KEEP DOING IT! Too many start up and think they failed because it takes time... KEEP DOING IT and results will come!

    5) Then a few times a month I publish a post that may have a few affiliate links in them together with links to good free alternatives. Doing this your post will be a good experience for both people that are looking for a free solution and people looking for a premium solution. Put the offer you want to convert in the top... and if possible use A/ B testing to try out a few variations of how to place the links, what text to have in the anchor text etc.

    6) Finally it is important to do keyword research and follow best practice on page SEO principles. It is a topic of it's own but so important!

This way a site can get good rankings even though there are affiliate links on it as it is not marked as pure advertising / spam. Again "Key focus" is to deliver value... it must be the mindset you have. Posts with affiliate links must be in a shape that makes people think...what a good list of resources, or what an excellent review! Otherwise you will not get the social likes, stumbles, bookmarks etc. that I believe are so important after Googles recent algorithm changes (e.g. Panda) and you will not survive a human inspection (which I believe some #1 rankings get to verify search ranking algorithms deliver value to its users)

Just trying to "trick the system" to get rankings by building links with bad tools is not effective... at least not for long. Google and other large players are constantly catching up with marketers that put a lot of effort into solutions that are on the edge or simple is pure content spam not providing any value (internet noise).

    Good luck...
