Any ideas how to make most out of web directories?

I own a couple of web directories, but they are not making me decent money. They earn around $30 monthly all together on adsense.

This is not the way I like it, it looks like it is stuck on this level. They need other income sources, maybe affiliate products, but what to display and what is the best way to do it???

According to what I have read, you can make money from your directory by having a nice unique template,people purchase links only if they have build their trust with your directory and this will increase your chances of earning money. A nice, friendly, easy to use design will attract an immense amount of users.

If you are submitting to a directory to help improve your site's link popularity and they are adding the nofollow attribute to outgoing links, it is not going to help you. Unless you are expecting to get some traffic from the directory, avoid it.
