Google's John Mueller: bad inbound links can hurt your site

In an online discussion, Google's John Mueller said that links from other websites can hurt your own site (despite of what Google said in the past):
"Looking back, I don't believe I've seen a site that was clearly in a bad position only because of third-party activity (such as getting links from bad websites).
Theoretically, it's probably possible (which is the reason for the 'almost'), but in practice, we have a lot of safeguards that help our algorithms to evaluate sites in useful ways. Our algorithms are pretty complex, it takes more than a handful of bad links to sway their opinion of a website."
This means it is important for all of us to check which sites are linking to your sites. This is one of the reasons we at webmaster cage developed our own backlink checker.

Still. If that would work, you can kill a relatively young site by spamming it to death with the tons of tools via the tons of proxies available. So no matter what it seems idiotic if it would work that way.

You are right about that Tycho. Mueller says:

Ok, with tools that generate over 100,000 links overnight, I don't know what would happen...

Hey first time i heard from some one that getting back link will hurt our site. As previously i know that more and more links more higher rank which means more traffic.
