Does a blog need comments?

I do have a wordpress blog and I do get some comments but not sure if they are needed? Why would I need to approve or decline a comment? does it help in my rankings?

Yeah its a good post about commenting.

Its always nice to get a few comments on posts

Yes it is. blog definitely needs good amount of comments. it will tell the users/visitors that how the admin/author of the blog is active.

Comments should not be offensive and that is why I believe. Some comments may contain unwanted material or criticism and something of that sort.

Comments can be pretty useful at times. It is the only way visitors express their feelings about the blog.

The only down side is that there are too many spam comments these days.

You don't need comments to have success with your blog. But comments do help with activity on your blog, which might result in more advertisers and even more people replying to the comments of others!

I agree with Nomar.
Comments are the mode of communication or interaction between the visitors and the owner of the blog.
Best way is to keep it on moderation so that you can see if someone is spamming your blog.

Depending on the blog, the comments could act like a thread for example if the post is about helping someone improve battery life etc.
