i feel that directory submissions are good for creating backlinks but the traffic it sends will mostly consist of other webmasters who submit their sites coz mostly webmasters only visit such directories so they only search for things and thus they constitute the traffic :P

Maybe he means search engine traffic. I have to say , add your site to directories , it is plus.. I know a user who made 2 sells , by only registering his site to a directories..

Directory submission is a very ideal way of getting quality backlinks. I think there cannot be no substitution for article marketing.

I am agree with Muhammad, personally i am doing the article submission, directories, blog commenting, forums, link exchange, Press release, Classified ads it too good for build a backlinks. get try it.. But always try to in a high PR & do follow link.

I mostly prefer to get backlink from doing forum posting, blog commenting, social bookmarking, directory submission and article submission. These will increase the website visitor. It will increase the website ranking up over search engine website.
