    Default Unsuccessful search engines

In the last few years there were a few search engines that started with a bang but that closed with a thud without much success. One such thing is goClick.com . It was very promising in the beginning but faded into wilderness.

When people are competing with Google, Yahoo and Bing, its hard to really get a big site.

The continued existence of big performers will see the ultimate end of a few ordinary performers for certain.

Well, maybe. It depends what you define unsuccessful as. If you just want to make money, you don't even need to be on the map to do great. If however, you're Microsoft or Yahoo and you want to compete with Google, or you're Google and you depend on search to fund the rest of your business ventures then success needs to be defined as large market share.

What I mean is that if you had .1% market share you could still make 100 million a year (revenue is estimated somewhere around 1 billion per 1% market share). 100 million a year isn't exactly unsuccessful. Yet, this would mean that almost no one (in comparison) has heard of you. By that definition you are unsuccessful.

I say it depends what your goals are.

Thats kinda my point. Ask.com (for example) is still a big, successful, company despite having lost almost any market share it once had.

ask.com is certainly a good one. I find google search has some sort of collaboration with ask.com. I am not very sure. Please let me know if I am right.

I don't believe there is anything currently going on between the two companies. I could be wrong but perhaps you're thinking of the (extremely short lived) advertising deal Google and Yahoo had either last year or the year before.

Oh! Good you have reminded me of that collaboration. I tend to forget certain such deals that took place over the years. thanks.
