Many professionals check the dedicated hosting service aspect of the web hosting provider before they sign up. What do you think about it?

Before you choose a web hosting you should determine your needs. Space, bandwidth and budget.
    a) Space – Cover your needs and allow for expansion if needed.
    b) Bandwidth- Same as above.
    c) Budget – Set a realistic budget for yourself. How much are you willing to spend? Lowest price too highest. Being a little flexible on your price will give more hosting choices.

The point about space/expansion is one of the most critical; if you think your site has any chance at all of expanding outside its current means, make sure you have a plan for that; some hosts have very cheap initial plans, but jump severely when bandwidth increases are needed; preparation in understanding your site capabilities is key in avoiding those drastic price jumps.

You can make agreements about this upfront. But a sudden boost of traffic that is this big.. you can see it most of the times upfront if anything is going to happen. At least if you have a VPS or dedicated server though.
