Spiders and crawlers will check the entire site, so I am not sure if the top left is really important when discussing them. However, visitors are most likely to see something in the top left hand corner than in the bottom or the top right hand corner. The best bet for placement of links is to put them in a location that is closest to the content. The closer you are to the content, the more likely someone is going to click the link and then, all the better.
