When I read the book I understood that javaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape in the lines of Java and there is not a much of a difference between the two.

Hello, I'm new here and could not pass up adding a comment in regard to your question.

If you have to ask this question and need to know about JavaScript language. Please read this below.

JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language used to enable programmatic access to computational objects within a host environment.

If you do not completely understand the statement above from end to end. I would not recommended you attempt in executing any of the code I have seen in this post.

JavaScript's are very powerful and can ruin your day really quick.

You can read what I wrote here if you would like to learn more.

Just my suggestion... choose your own path.
If you break it I can fix it.....

Pick up Javascript in 24 hours online somewhere and you'll figure it out. The book is like really old, but it helped me learn the basics

I've never tried to calculate a percentage of compliance or variability of JavaScript across browsers and never seen anyone report it that way. I'm not certain how one would compute such a value meaningfully. However, there are major differences in the implementations of JavaScript between IE and just about everybody else. Most non-IE browsers, e.g., Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, etc., are VERY similar to each other JavaScript-wise.

JavaScript was originally designed by good old Net Scape.. back in the days. JavaScript is an object scripting language that you can use in within your web pages. It's a client side language.
