I don't think they do give better rankings. I think the only reason I saw traffic spikes beyond just what I was getting in click throughs was due to the fact that people will remember ads they see and visit a site by entering a URL instead of clicking on an ad.

Of course, at the time I was advertising through adwords I was running a site selling games, so I had content that you couldn't get anywhere else.

We need to have a lot of patience before meeting with success with google adwords. Patience is the keyword.
